Mother Nature ended today’s practice early. The day started sunny and warm and it looked to be another full day of fun at the track. I snapped this photo from the terrace of the Media Center around 9:30 about an hour and a half before practice started at 11:00. They had just opened the gates to the public, so the Pagoda Plaza was still fairly empty and calm.

Congratulations to Patti Nolan from the Chicago area, who got 29 of the 50 questions correct. I have heard from many it was harder than I thought it was. Thanks to everyone who entered and at least tried. Next time I’ll make it shorter and easier. Here are the correct answers:

The weather that was supposed to go through last night never did. So far, I’ve not seen a drop of rain since I’ve been here (knock on wood). Today was warmer than yesterday and it showed on track. Josef Newgarden ran the quickest lap of the day at 228.856, which was almost a mile an hour slower than yesterdays fast speed set by his Penske teammate Will Power.

What Should NBC Expect in Year One?

After one day of more or less hanging around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during practice, I’ve found one of the more enjoyable aspects is that it’s more laid back than it will be this weekend. That doesn’t just go for the teams and drivers, but for those of us in the IMS Media Center as well. That allows for a lot of time to do some serious “bench racing”; which is a term similar to “hangar flying” used by some pilots I know. If there was any question whether or not spending the entire week of practice at IMS was a good idea, I already have the answer. It was. I was not here at the start of practice at 11:00. I was about thirty minutes later leaving Nashville, than I had planned. So, practice was already underway as I was arriving in town. With that being the case, I decided to go by the hotel to see if I could go ahead and check in and drop my luggage off. By the the time I did all that, it was about 12:30 when I got to the track.

Guess Where I’m Going Today

This week I have the opportunity to do something I’ve wanted to do all my life, but was never able to do it until now. As most of you read this, I am on my way back to Indianapolis less than forty-eight hours after leaving there on Sunday. I am heading back up in order to attend every practice session leading up to Qualifying Weekend and I hope to be there by the time practice starts this morning at 11:00 EDT.

Random Thoughts on the IndyCar Grand Prix

The 2019 IndyCar Grand Prix was one for the ages. We are now a couple of days removed and I’m still thinking about what a great race we watched on Saturday. But I can’t help but ask myself a couple of questions. First, was it really great or does it just look good when to comparing it with some of the snoozers we’ve watched at the IndyCar Grand Prix over the years. I also wonder if I’m giving it more credit because it was one of the most exciting races of the season, if not the most exciting.
