We’ve known for a few months now that Tony Stewart wants to run the Indianapolis 500 again. Stewart’s plan was to run another oval race before tackling the “500” in order to re-acclimate himself to Indy car racing and to this new car in particular. Since there will be no ovals before next year’s Indianapolis 500, that meant in order to follow that plan Stewart would be aiming toward the 2020 Indianapolis 500 and probably running at Pocono in 2019 for his “refresher” race.

Last week, I was reading through Robin Miller’s Mailbag. I came across a very lengthy letter that had a well-thought out suggestion on how IndyCar could structure a season-ending playoff method to crown its champion. It involved racing on fall holidays (Columbus Day, Veterans Day) on a street course, road course and an oval. The finale would be the oval contested in prime time on Veterans Day at Fontana.

Don’t tell anyone, but a couple of weeks ago my husband turned 60. The big 6-0 is a milestone birthday and I knew it had to be special. I had the same milestone right after Indy and he bought me a very nice camera that I had been wanting. My birthday falls about a week after every Indy 500, so George usually treats it as an afterthought. When he stepped up and did something special for my birthday this year, I knew I’d better do the same.

Surprisingly, a lot of people had their bubble burst last week when Fernando Alonso announced he would not be racing the entire IndyCar season in 2019. I hate to say “I told you so” (OK…I don’t really hate it), but if you go back and read a post I wrote in August – I never thought he was going to do anything other than a few select races along with another shot at the Indianapolis 500.
It Matters To Me

I’m not sure what it is about IndyCar racing that brings out my inner detail-nerd. Female co-workers can completely change their hair style and color, and I don’t notice it. Susan can wear a new outfit and I never comment on it because it looks like all the others to me. A couple of years ago, a male co-worker commented on a shirt I was wearing and remarked that I wore it about three weeks earlier. I found the comment sort of strange on several levels, but one was that I don’t even remember what I wore yesterday – much less three weeks ago.
Should Ed Carpenter Focus Solely On ECR?

This was an eventful week at Ed Carpenter Racing (ECR). After hinting that he was looking for a full-time ride for 2019, we learned on Monday that driver Jordan King would not be returning to the No.20 car of ECR for the non-ovals. The very next day, it announced that Ed Jones would be taking over that ride for the non-ovals as well as a third car (No.64) in the Indianapolis 500, through an arrangement with Scuderia Corsa. Ed Carpenter will continue to contest all of the ovals in the No.20 car, including the 2019 Indianapolis 500; while Spencer Pigot will drive the No.21 entry in all seventeen races on the 2019 schedule.
