Having brothers that both race is nothing new. In fact, it’s fairly common. We’re all familiar with the Unsers and the Bettenhausens. The Unser brothers each had sons who also raced, while the Bettenhausen brothers followed in their father’s footsteps. The first Andretti brothers to race were not Michael and Jeff – it was their father Mario and his twin brother Aldo. Some say Aldo was the better racer of the two, but we’ll never know because Aldo suffered a near-fatal accident that sidelined him and ended his career early on.

Since the 2018 universal aero kit was unveiled last spring, there have been mostly positive comments from fans about the looks. Now drivers are praising the way it drives. We are keeping our fingers crossed that it will also produce great racing, as everyone is predicting. But there is one slight negative about the new design that IndyCar doesn’t quite seem to know how to deal with – the placement of the car number on the side.

I know many of you will think I should write about this weekend’s Rolex 24. While there will be several IndyCar drivers in the field, I’m not as knowledgeable about IMSA as many of you are. I will enjoy watching it tomorrow and Sunday, but it’s not in my comfort zone to write much about it. Besides, I wrote about it one or two years ago and most of you seemed bored with my musings on it. Instead, I’ll submit a rant on something I usually don’t complain about too much – the fan experience at the Indianapolis 500.

Lost in the midst of all of the Danica Patrick discussions that took place last week was this little tidbit that I considered a pretty big deal. Schmidt Peterson Motorsports (SPM) hired well-known engineer, Leena Gade, to be the lead engineer for the car of James Hinchcliffe. Gade is a three-time winning engineer for Audi at the 24-hours of Le Mans.

I am not normally one for reality shows. I’ll admit that back around 2005, Susan got me to watching American Idol for a couple of seasons before I found it tiresome. Of course, I committed to watch the two seasons of Dancing With the Stars that had IndyCar stars as contestants, until they were voted off the show. As luck would have it, both drivers stayed around through the finals.

If you have been paying attention to the Verizon IndyCar Series, you know that Jordan King has joined Ed Carpenter Racing for the upcoming season to drive the No.20 car on the non-ovals. René Binder was also given a four-race deal with Juncos Racing. My first question when I heard both of these names was “who?”.
