As I mentioned last week, James Hinchcliffe will be taking over the No. 26 car vacated by Zach Veach last week. Veach had said the reason he was stepping away was so that Andretti Autosport could talk to several drivers as they prepared for the 2021 season.

Last Thursday afternoon, most IndyCar fans were caught off guard with the news that Arrow McLaren SP rookie driver Oliver Askew was withdrawing from this weekend’s Harvest Grand Prix at IMS. Following the race at Mid-Ohio, Askew said he was having balance and coordination issues. Throughout the weekend, it was reported that this was the result of his hard crash into the pit entrance attenuator, during last month’s Indianapolis 500. If you saw the crash, it’s certainly believable that he would still be dealing with the after-effects more than a month later.

On Wednesday, we got confirmation that Zach Veach will not be returning to Andretti Autosport for the 2021 season. I’m speculating here, but it’s a pretty good bet that Gainbridge decided not to renew their three-year sponsorship agreement that expires at the end of the current season. Veach brought them to Andretti and even to IMS as the presenting sponsor for the Indianapolis 500. I don’t know that Gainbridge is not returning, but that is my assumption for this post anyway.

Longtime followers of this site know what I think about AJ Foyt. He was my favorite driver as I attended many Indianapolis 500s of the mid-to-late sixties. As a freshman in college, I screamed in celebration to no one as I listened in solitude to the radio broadcast of Foyt’s fourth Indianapolis 500 win in 1977. I was there for his final race in 1992 and I was also onsite when Foyt said goodbye in 1993, just before Pole Day qualifying. To this day, he is still my all-time favorite driver and you will never convince me that there was anyone better than him. Ever.

From 2001 until 2008, IndyCar raced at Nashville Superspeedway. It was always good to get to attend a two-day IndyCar event and spend every night in my own bed. Less than a year after IndyCar staged their last race in Nashville, I started this website. Shortly after that, I was able to obtain media credentials to the Indianapolis 500 and other races.
It’s Good When Worlds Collide

A few people have e-mailed me, wondering why I have ignored the fact that NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson is coming to the NTT IndyCar Series in 2021. I haven’t ignored it. It’s just that I didn’t have time to write about it until now. I post every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The news broke last Wednesday and we had the race weekend at Mid-Ohio to deal with, so today is the first chance I’ve had to write about it.
