We fans of the Verizon IndyCar Series can be a cynical bunch. We complain a lot and many times for very good reasons. But this week, we reached a milestone that we can all be thankful for. Simona de Silvestro decided to take a chance and take the steps necessary to fulfill her ultimate dream of being a Formula One driver. Due to a chain of unfortunate circumstances, let’s just say that it didn’t work out.

There is a myth going around that needs to be exposed. For months; IndyCar fans, forums and websites have been lamenting the fact that this is a terribly long offseason that is unsurpassed in the history of motor sports. This past Friday, legendary driver AJ Foyt was admitted to the hospital with sporadic chest pain. The initial tests showed very little, but a procedure this past Monday showed blockages in arteries that had given Foyt problems in recent years. On Wednesday, he underwent triple bypass surgery. At last report, the fiery Texan was doing well and was expected to be released by Monday.

The name Gillian Zucker probably doesn’t resonate with the casual racing fan. Hard-core fans of the Verizon IndyCar Series might have a hard time placing her name. Even those that follow the business side of the sport, who know the names of Hulman, George, Belskus, Bernard and Miles might pause when her name is mentioned. That’s a shame, because she has been a very good friend to IndyCar over the years.
