Random Thoughts On Mid-Ohio

For a race that has a reputation as being somewhat of a parade, yesterday’s Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio was anything but processional. While the new unified aero kit may still need tweaking at some of the ovals on the Verizon IndyCar Series schedule; the series should be given high marks for how much better the car races on road and street courses. The race at Toronto two weeks ago was probably the best I’ve seen there, and I can now say the same for yesterday’s race at Mid-Ohio.

The Verizon IndyCar Series makes its annual visit to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course this weekend for the Honda Indy 200. This is one of those tracks that I really want to go to one of these days, but so far I’ve never been. Such will be the case this weekend as I’ll be watching from the confines of my den.

One of the common laments for fans of the Verizon IndyCar Series over the past few years has been dwindling attendance at ovals. Series officials and race promoters have been scratching their collective heads trying to figure out how to get more fans to attend oval races, which make up the DNA of Indy car racing.

This weekend is a well-earned weekend off for the IndyCar teams. This is the only weekend off in a four-week stretch. In fact, this is only the fourth weekend off for the teams since March (if you count the open test at IMS on Apr 30). Since the Verizon IndyCar Series raced at Phoenix on Apr 7, teams have been off the weekends of May 6, June 17 and July 1 before being off this upcoming weekend.

Two Nearby Tracks That Are Worlds Apart

Yesterday, we got confirmation on what had been rumored for a while – that WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca will be on the 2019 IndyCar schedule. The only thing close to a surprise at this point was that we learned that it will serve as the site of the season finale in 2019, covering the weekend of Sep 20-22. Last Friday, that rumor came pretty close to fact when Laguna Seca sent out a tweet saying that the Verizon IndyCar Series would be running there next season, and that a press conference would be happening Tuesday to formally announce it. That’s about as confirmed as you can get when the actual track tweets it out.

Random Thoughts On Toronto

The Honda Indy Toronto is usually a wild stop for the Verizon IndyCar Series, and yesterday was no exception. It is not an exaggeration whatsoever to say that things got crazy right at the drop of the green flag. Heading into Turn One in the shadow of the Prince’s Gate, the entire field was acting as if they were on the final lap instead of the opening lap. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a more aggressive first lap the entire way around the track as the one I saw yesterday. Everyone was driving with a sense of urgency.
