This weekend, the IndyCar Series heads to one of my favorite cities on the east coast. There aren’t many things I thank my ex-wife for, other than my children. She was from Philadelphia and had lived in Baltimore for a brief time. She always insisted that we stop in Baltimore on the way to Philly to spend some time in the Inner Harbor at Baltimore. For that, I am thankful. Otherwise, I may never have experienced that vibrant area of shops, bars and restaurants. I’m not keen on shopping. In my earlier life, I spent more time (and money) in bars than I care to think about. Of course, I’ve always loved to eat. If you have any interest in any of those, the Inner Harbor offers outstanding selections for all – situated in a very historic and scenic setting.

With the recent crashes and subsequent injuries of Tony Stewart and Helio Castroneves; many have questioned whether or not they are exhibiting good judgment, while others simply ask why the do it. The simple answer is because they are racers, but things are never quite that simple.

Random Thoughts On Sonoma

Posted in IndyCar on August 26, 2013 by Oilpressure

Just when the IndyCar Series gives you no reason to suspect that yesterday’s GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma would be anything but a snoozer, they go and throw you a curve. After a caution-free race at Mid-Ohio, yesterday’s race was almost comical with the amount of minor on-track skirmishes that saw a lot of carbon fiber pieces flying and tempers flaring resulting in an event-record seven cautions. In the end, there was one controversial call that may have decided this year’s championship.

At the risk of sounding repetitive, the IndyCar Series is heading for a dustbowl this weekend. I say that because every year prior to the race at Sonoma Raceway, that has been the word I have always used to describe the track formerly known as Infineon Raceway and Sears Point before that.

Is That Really The 2014 Schedule?

Posted in IndyCar on August 21, 2013 by Oilpressure

Late last week, Robin Miller tipped us off as to what the 2014 IndyCar schedule would look like. This was certainly not official, but Robin Miller is usually dead-on accurate when it comes to stories like this. Whenever the IndyCar Series announces the official slate in the (hopefully) near future, I don’t expect there to be any deviation from what Robin predicts. At first glance, it was very unremarkable – but there were some subtle enhancements.

An Old Favorite Returns On A Monday

To the delight of some and the dismay of many – “One Take Only” returns after a five-month hiatus and this time, shows up on a day usually reserved for a post. I had originally decided to take this day off from the site, in order to relax on a race-free weekend. Instead, JohnMc and I decided to resurrect the ol’ videoblog.

What To Look For In A Title Sponsor – Part II

Posted in IndyCar on August 16, 2013 by Oilpressure

This past Wednesday, I discussed some of the past title sponsorships that have existed in motorsports and their varying degrees of successes. We also dissected what went wrong with the IZOD sponsorship that IndyCar actually benefited from for the past four seasons. The main question remaining is where IndyCar goes from here in their search for a new title sponsor. I’m also curious about jumping into the world of the hypothetical. In a perfect world where IndyCar got to choose the perfect title sponsor – who would it be?
