An Early Start To The Month

The Month of May got an unofficial early kickoff last night – actually, there were two early kickoffs. First, Trackside with Curt Cavin and Kevin Lee went nightly for the month starting last night. Then, one of my favorite traditions for the entire month started last night with The Talk of Gasoline Alley with Donald Davidson. Last year, I don’t think things kicked off until about a week later. I’m glad that both have decided to start things off before the month officially begins tomorrow.

Travel Adventures & Pictures From Barber

Travelling to races can always be an adventure. You never know what you might encounter. Such was the case this past weekend, when Susan and I attended the Honda Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park. The weekend at the track was great – except for the rain on Sunday, which couldn’t be helped. Any surprises we encountered at the track were good ones. The same cannot be said for some of our time spent away from the track.

Random Thoughts On Barber

The fifth Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama is in the books and I’m proud to say that Susan and I have attended every single one, including yesterday’s race.  There are still only three drivers who have ever won at Barber Motorsports Park. Helio Castroneves was the first, Will Power won the next two and Ryan Hunter-Reay has won the last two. Hunter-Reay won again yesterday in dominating fashion. He and Will Power both pulled away from the field early, with Power leading Hunter-Reay. Then Power spun on the rain-slicked surface. Power recovered nicely, but still re-entered the course training Hunter-Reay. From that point on, Hunter-Reay was never seriously challenged again.

What a day! And for once, I don’t mean that in the best of ways. As I type, it’s after 7:00 and the race has been over for only a few minutes. Normally, we would be more than halfway back to Nashville. It will be a long night, so this will be a short post.

SScruggs

By Susan Phillips

As we wait out this long weather delay at Barber Motorsports Park, I thought I’d chime in with something useful for future race-goers. This one’s more for the women who read Oilpressure, but I will assume some guys will find it helpful.

An Afternoon Of Frustration

Posted in IndyCar on April 27, 2014 by Oilpressure

Just after my last post, things got extremely frustrating. The internet went down in the media center, meaning no one could post anything. There are rumors as to what happened from someone tripped over a cable and ripped it in two, to the entire router blew. Whatever the case, no one can connect. Cell connection is spotty here, especially when you are not a Verizon customer. Given the amount of people on the grounds today, I could not tweet or even check my own post. I suddenly felt cut off from the world.

Welcome To Race Morning At Barber

Posted in IndyCar on April 27, 2014 by Oilpressure

Good morning from a cloudy, warm and muggy Barber Motorsports Park near Birmingham. Unlike the last two days, this is not what I would call “Chamber of Commerce” weather. It was drizzling when we left our hotel. It doesn’t appeared to have rained here, but reports have some showers hitting here around noon local time, which is about two hours before the start of the Verizon IndyCar race.
