Random Thoughts on Texas

As Saturday night’s DXC Technology 600 at Texas Motor Speedway came to an exciting finish, my initial thoughts were that this was a race that should please everyone, the oval fans as well as the oval haters. But all it took was one check of social media to learn how wrong I was. The fans of ovals found it boring and strung out, while the haters still hated without pointing to any real reason.

For the second time in less than three months, the NTT IndyCar Series heads to the Lone Star State. The first was for the lengthy road course in Austin at the impressive Circuit of the Americas (COTA), won by rookie Colton Herta. Now the series returns for the high-banked 1.5-mile oval Texas Motor Speedway (TMS) in Fort Worth.

Why Rossi Should Not Go to Team Penske

Perhaps I should have entitled this “Why I Don’t Want Rossi to Go to Team Penske”. Of course, since Simon Pagenaud won the Indianapolis 500, it’s far less likely that Alexander Rossi will get that call from The Captain. But make no doubt, if Roger Penske makes the call – you go. Al Unser, Jr. and Gil de Ferran did it, so did André Ribeiro, Greg Moore, Sam Hornish and Josef Newgarden. They were all with decent teams, but when the offer was extended – they all jumped to the best team in the business.

Random Thoughts on Belle Isle

For someone who historically doesn’t care for much of anything about Belle Isle, I came away from the double-header event fairly pleased – for the most part. Granted, it took Sunday’s wild race to salvage the weekend, as Saturday gave us only forty-three mostly wet laps over only seventy-five minutes of a timed race. Overall, Saturday left us with more questions than answers.

Although today’s calendar still says May 31, we all know that the Month of May effectively ended this past Sunday, when Simon Pagenaud took the checkered flag after a thrilling late-race duel with Alexander Rossi. The Victory Banquet put a period on the month and that was it. All that’s left are the memories of another Month of May and the start of a new countdown to the 104th Running of the Indianapolis 500 to be held on Sunday May 24, 2020.

With all of the posts that happen in the Month of May, sometimes I get a little lost in the shuffle. I meant to post these shortly after the race, but time got away from me. The day after the race, we head back into Speedway.

Note from George:  If you’ll recall last August, I got an e-mail from a longtime reader of this site, Matthew Lawrenson from the UK, who asked if he could do a guest post giving his perspective of life in the UK as an IndyCar fan. Then this past February, he wanted to give his take on the new TV rights package that appeared to be shutting out fans in the UK. They ended up getting the package just days before the season-opening race at St. Petersburg. Now he would like to share his experiences of watching Sunday’s Indianapolis 500 from overseas. It’s an interesting take, and I think you’ll enjoy it. – GP

I’m sure I wouldn’t be wrong in assuming that most readers of this blog are based in the USA. IndyCar is, after all, based entirely in North America.  As such, most of the media coverage is aimed towards the American market. Understandable, and thankfully these days the internet makes news easier, faster and cheaper to find. But the coverage of the 500 in the UK? Well, good luck in finding any at all.
