When John McLallen and I did a reboot of One Take Only last month, you probably were hoping it was a one-time reunion thing and that would be it. You were probably hoping that I would not stoop so low as to include our video blog into the May content of this site. If so, you are not so lucky.

This is the last weekend of the month, when there will be no track activity at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Next weekend starts a flurry of activity, beginning with the GMR Grand Prix Friday and Saturday on the IMS road course. The following Tuesday (May 17) officially begins practice for the Indianapolis 500. Practice will run all week, leading up to Fast Friday on May 20 and then Qualifying weekend on Saturday and Sunday, May 21-22. Race Weekend begins with Carb Day on Friday May 27, followed by an abbreviated Legends Day on Saturday leading up to Race Day of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday May 29.

I’m ashamed to admit that I am way behind on my reading. Last spring, I got two books that I had heard great things about – Paul Page’s autobiography, and the well-renowned book by John Oreovicz on The Split. Then last fall, Susan gave me the Al Unser, Jr. book for my birthday, to add to my collection.

Although it’s hard to believe, the 1992 Indianapolis 500 ran thirty years ago this month. That race is known for many things. First of all, it is one of the coldest 500s in history. I sat there on that cold day that barely cracked 50°, but with the wind – it felt like it was below forty. It is also known as the race that was completely dominated by Michael Andretti, until he fell out with eleven laps to go. Most notably, it is known for the closest finish in the history of the Indianapolis 500 – officially .043 seconds between the winning car of Al Unser, Jr. and the second-place car of Scott Goodyear.
Welcome to the Month of May!

Welcome to the Month of May! For the second year in a row, we have had to welcome the month a little belatedly due to race coverage of a race that took place in early May. Last year, the double-header at Texas took place on May 1. On Sunday, the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama took place. I’m not a big fan of IndyCar races being run outside of IMS during the Month of May. The schedule makers didn’t ask for my opinion, so we will just have to deal with it. Anyway, the Month of May is officially here – so welcome!

What started out as a bleak and dreary morning turned out to be a beautiful day. By the time the Indy cars were lined up for the starting grid, it was a beautiful day. Any hopes that anyone had of a race in the wet, were dashed about an hour before the green flag waved. A wet race might have made things more interesting, because rain can always provide a wild card.
