Although they were only three hours apart, Session One and Session Two were miles apart. While there were few takers when Session One started, everyone took to the track as soon as the green flag flew for Session Two. I’m not sure many of the teams got much out of Practice One this morning at Barber Motorsports Park. It was a very disjointed practice from the very beginning. It seemed that for the first half of the practice, very few teams had any interest in running. Felix Rosenqvist, Pato O’Ward, Colton Herta and Marcus Ericsson appeared to be the only ones running.

As you read this, Susan and I are on our way to the south for the tenth running of the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park, just east of Birmingham. One of the best things about the month of April is that it is rife with rumors regarding possible rides for the Indianapolis 500, which is now less than eight weeks away. We keep hearing that there are going to be thirty-seven cars trying to squeeze into the traditional field of thirty-three, but I’m not sure if we’ve even reached thirty-four confirmed driver-car combinations. Whatever the current count is, there are still a few seats to fill if we are to reach thirty-seven or thirty-eight entries.

First of all, there is no April Fools’ joke hidden in this article. It will probably not surprise many of you that I am not a fan of April Fools’ Day. That’s not just because I’ve grow into a grumpy old man in my later years – I didn’t even like it as a kid. I was never much on playing the annual pranks on people and I never could remember what day it was, so I got bitten a lot. As a result, I’ve never cared for it. That’s not a rant, but an assurance that what I’ve written for today is the truth.
