After an uneventful drive, we ae now comfortably ensconced into our customary seats in the IMS Media Center. We were only forty minutes late from when I wanted to leave. Comparatively speaking, that’s not too bad. There was more construction on I-65 in Indiana than I was expecting, but there were no real delays.

By the time you read this, I’m hoping Susan and I will be on I-65 headed north to Indianapolis. I use the word “hoping” because sometimes my wife doesn’t feel the urgency to get on the road that I do. The plan was to be on the road by 6:00 this morning. Counting the fact that we lose an hour with the time change, that puts us at IMS a little after 11:00 am EDT. Unfortunately, a 6:00 estimated departure time sometimes ends up actually being delayed by a couple of hours.

Note from George: Most remember Paul Dalbey from “More Front Wing”, which has sadly gone the way of many of the IndyCar blogs. I have always offered this site up to Paul, in case the writing bug ever bites him again. For the Month of May, it has – so I was very happy to give him this space to express his thoughts. Although we are practically a generation apart in age, we think a lot alike. That either makes me a very immature geriatric or makes Paul a very grumpy young man. Draw your own conclusions. – GP
As most of the people who visit this site on a regular basis are likely die-hard fans of the Verizon IndyCar Series, and by extension the Indianapolis 500, it’s understandable how many readers have become jaded by the magnitude of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. We’re used to it. We know there is nothing else that compares to it in the world of sports, and we have become somewhat numb to how massive the race really is. Step back for a moment and consider just how vast 230,000 reserved seats are. And then add another 75,000-100,000 people to account for suites and general admission. Conservatively, let’s say there will be 300,000 people at the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500. Three Hundred Thousand people.

It’s that time again! It’s time for the eighth annual Oilpressure.com Indianapolis 500 Trivia Contest. While some have said that last year’s was too hard, many people missed only two of the thirty-three questions. Of course, last year’s winner, our good friend Paul Dalbey formerly of More Front Wing, turned in a perfect answer sheet just under the deadline. So it can be done.

You may or may not have seen that the Official Program for the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500 is now available for sale on the IMS website. Even if you are not planning on attending the race this year, you might want to consider ordering a program in order to own a small piece of history.
The Most Important Person In IMS History

Starting in mid-April, The Indianapolis Star began a series in which they listed the Top-100 most influential people in the history of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The list was revealed in reverse order in groups of ten. A recent release showed positions 10 through 3, but the remaining two were released just a couple of days ago – Tony Hulman and Carl Fisher. The Star considers Tony Hulman THE most influential or important.
