A Bad Way to Start the Weekend

Not that anyone really cares, but three years ago, this site started a joint-venture with another IndyCar site, Field of 33, which is run by my good friend Paul Dalbey. We called it Two Sites Unite. While it doesn’t have quite the humor that the old video series from this site, One Take Only with my longtime friend John McLallen had – there is a lot more meat and hard-core racing discussed on Two Sites Unite. There is also a lot more time involved. We get to talking and can’t shut up. We dusted off our video cameras a couple of nights ago and recorded another episode.

Drawing Some Obscure Parallels

I watched both football games on Sunday, even though I’m still smarting over how the Titans absolutely threw away their chance to host the AFC Championship. I now know who I will be rooting for in the Super Bowl – the Rams. The week between the Titans and the Chiefs games, the Bengals fans and players did nothing but talk trash about the Titans. The players said that the Titans were scared of them even before kickoff. I guess that would explain how the Titans sacked Joe Burrow nine times, because they were so scared. Titans QB Ryan Tannehill? He may have been scared, based on how he played. But Bengal fans were so obnoxious that following week, I decided to pull for whoever they played for the remainder of the playoffs.

I learned my lesson the hard way several years ago, to not do write-ups about the Rolex 24 at Daytona. I forget exactly what year it was, but it was one of those typical years when a lot of NTT IndyCar Series drivers were in the field. For one thing, most readers here reminded me that this was an IndyCar site, and they didn’t come here to read about sports cars. I also got myself in trouble, because I have a very casual knowledge of sports car endurance racing. Not knowing all of the nuances and strategies of the Rolex 24, I said a lot of things that we’re flat-out wrong. I swore then, that I would stick to what I know best.

A Theory That Needs to Go Away

In the past, I’ve expressed my frustration at some of the comments posted in various IndyCar related Facebook groups. Most of the posts in these groups are well thought-out posts, with sometimes rare or interesting photos. It’s the comments that other people feel the need to add, that can make you want to pull your hair out.

Perhaps the most significant quote to come out of last week’s IndyCar Content Days, was when Scott Dixon uttered the now infamous phrase junior category car to describe the current Indy car.

Remembering the Other Granatelli

The racing world lost another link to its past on Saturday, when we learned that Vince Granatelli had passed away at the age of 78. Most will recognize the famous last name and the day-glo orange that Vince Granatelli Racing cars all carried. The car driven by Roberto Guerrero in the 1987 Indianapolis 500, that could have won had fate not stepped in – was a Vince Granatelli car. Granatelli’s final IndyCar season was in 1991, when Arie Luyendyk drove a car that carried blank sidepods for most of the season (except for the 1991 Indianapolis 500, when it carried RCA sponsorship).

Update: First, I’d like to give a quick update on Susan. An optimist will hear this as fantastic news. Debbie Downers like me always want more facts, before celebrating. On Tuesday, Susan was put under sedation (thankfully) and they drilled a hole in her hip, and extracted bone marrow. This was analyzed to learn the type of leukemia she was dealing with and how advanced it was. Her hematologist called Wednesday evening with her results. The bone marrow showed zero evidence of any leukemia.
