From the moment I stepped out of my car in the infield of World Wide Technology Raceway (WWTR – formerly known as Gateway Motorsports Park), in Madison, Illinois – things slightly different, but very right all at the same time. What was different was that this was my first time to attend Gateway without my wife Susan present. What was right was how normal everything seemed at the track.

It took over four and a half hours, but the 2022 edition of the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 is now in the books. It was worth waiting for. After a more than a two hour rain delay, the final forty-two laps were run; much to the chagrin of Scott McLaughlin who was leading when the rains came.

It’s Race day at WWT Raceway!

Good morning from World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois – just across the river from St. Louis. When I left my hotel this morning, the skies were gray and it was sprinkling just a little. I didn’t fret too much, because it was predicted. However, by the time I got to the track, the skies had broken and there was blue sky above and the overcast was to the east and moving away.

History is Made in Qualifying

Qualifying is complete for the 2022 Bommarito automotive Group 500, and the historic significance can’t be overlooked. Will Power won the pole and with the bonus point, extends his lead over Scott Dixon to seven. But by winning another pole, Power tied Mario Andretti’s long-standing record of 67 IndyCar poles, that was set at Michigan in 1993.

Practice One is in the Books

To say Practice One went of without hitch is technically correct, but I saw a few drivers sliding through the turns as I watched from both ends of the track from the infield. But no drivers made contact with the wall or each other, so it was technically a success.
