Scott McLaughlin ended up being the fastest qualifier for this afternoon’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500. He is technically the pole winner, and will take the point that comes with that. Unfortunately, McLaughlin is one of several drivers that will sustain a nine-position starting grid penalty, for an unapproved engine change.

Welcome to a rain-soaked Worldwide Technology Raceway, just across the Mississippi River from downtown St. Louis. As I’m sure you are well aware, the track is in an extended rain delay. We left Nashville around 6:30 am, knowing we would not make the opening practice. We were on I-57 at 10:00 am, when I pulled up Peacock to listen to practice, I heard Kevin Lee say it was pouring at the track, and everything was on hold. That actually worked out for us, since we were no longer going to miss any track activity.

The Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at World Wide Technology Raceway (WWTR) at Gateway takes place this weekend. This is normally where I would say that Susan and I are on our way there. However, this event has been shifted from a Saturday night race to Sunday afternoon. Ovals became two-day events years ago, so I am actually working today and we will drive to Gateway tomorrow morning.
Remembering Bill Vukovich II

Monday morning, I woke up to the news that Bill Vukovich II had passed away Sunday night at the age of seventy-nine. It is always sad to learn that one of the racers from my childhood years spent going to the Indianapolis 500 has passed away. Fewer and fewer are left from my time going to the race as a kid. But hearing the news of Vukovich brings more sadness than usual, probably because he seemed to carry so much sadness with him over the past three decades.
