Good morning from a wet Road America. It was dry at our hotel in Sheboygan just before we left for the track. But rain started hitting the windshield about halfway here. It was more of an annoying mist than anything, but just as we got to the gate, it started raining in earnest. Practice started just as we were getting set up in the media center. Given the weather conditions, we will spend this practice session in the dry confines of the media center.

This will come as surprise to some, and a sacrilege to many. Readers here know of my deep love, passion and respect for the Indianapolis 500. I cherish every visit to the hallowed ground at 16th and Georgetown (or the roundabout, or Polco…or whichever snarky nickname you have for that piece of land now that Georgetown Road no longer extends to 16th Street) that I have made since 1965.

If the word “chaos” had been a drinking game, while watching the Chevrolet Grand Prix of Detroit, there would’ve been few people left that were still coherent enough to watch the end. Ironically, that was the best part. Scott Dixon avoided enough chaos to make it to the front on fuel strategy, then held off a teammate, a former teammate and overcame a lapped car on his way to his fifty-eighth career victory and assuming the points lead. It was not a bad day for a driver, who quietly qualified in the fifth starting spot and was not really considered a factor – until he was. Sooner or later, we are going to learn to never give up on Scott Dixon.

This time the site is downtown Detroit for the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix. Last year was the first year for the new circuit after the race left Belle Isle and moved back to downtown for the first time since 1991.
