Welcome to a sunny, but cool and blustery Road America. It is currently 62°, but there is a very stiff wind out of the west, which makes it very chilly. Since the temperature at home is supposed to be in the 90s today – I’m not complaining. The weather is supposed to be perfect all weekend.

This will come as surprise to some, and a sacrilege to many. Readers here know of my deep love, passion and respect for the Indianapolis 500. I cherish every visit to the hallowed ground at 16th and Georgetown (or the roundabout, or Polco…or whichever snarky nickname you have for that piece of land now that Georgetown Road no longer extends to 16th Street) that I have made since 1965.

If the word “chaos” had been a drinking game, while watching the Chevrolet Grand Prix of Detroit, there would’ve been few people left that were still coherent enough to watch the end. Ironically, that was the best part. It was not a bad day for a driver, who quietly qualified in the fifth starting spot and was not really considered a factor – until he was. Sooner or later, we are going to learn to never give up on Scott Dixon.

This time the site is downtown Detroit for the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix. Last year was the first year for the new circuit after the race left Belle Isle and moved back to downtown for the first time since 1991.

Random Thoughts on the Indianapolis 500

The 108th Running of the Indianapolis 500 is now in the books. Some said the race would be pushed to Monday and possibly finished on Tuesday. Others (including myself) said the race would start on Sunday and run the required 101 laps to make it an official race, but would eventually be shortened by rain. Few said it would start on Sunday and run the full 500 miles, but that’s exactly what happened.

First of all…what a race! After a four hour delay, when a lot of people swore to me that “they heard” that plans were already in motion to scrap the day and do this on Monday, the track dried and suddenly the traditional pre-race ceremonies were underway.
