What dawned as a lazy and rainy Friday heading into what was to be an uneventful weekend, suddenly turned upside-down.

Was This Plan A, B or C?

In early July, it was announced that Alexander Rossi and Arrow McLaren would be parting ways. I immediately came to the conclusion that the 2016 Indianapolis 500 winner had been fired – another casualty of being employed by Zak Brown. As it turned out, it actually was a mutual parting. Rossi’s contract was up at the end of the 2024 season, and they had offered him just a one-year extension to return. Rossi decided he deserved more than a one-year contract, so he opted to leave. Rahal Letterman Lanigan’s (RLL) Christian Lundgaard was hired to drive Rossi’s No. 7 beginning in 2025.

For better or worse, IndyCar now has a charter system. This is similar to NASCAR’’s charter system that has been in existence since 2016. I have stayed mostly silent on this topic for one main reason – I didn’t feel I knew enough about it to speak halfway intelligently on it. Plus, nothing was official until yesterday morning. If you count the opening day of practice at St. Petersburg back in March, the NTT IndyCar Series just wrapped up a season that spanned 160 days, from March 8 though this past Sunday September 15. We now have 166 days until practice begins again at St. Petersburg. It lacks just a few days of being totally symmetrical for the calendar when you look at season compared to offseason.

Random Thoughts on Nashville

Greetings from Vanderbilt University Medical Center! After a day at the track and writing a post-race re-cap, I packed up my stuff and headed west to visit with Susan in the hospital and write my Random Thoughts. This may be more brief than usual, but please understand why. Susan is still doing very well, and will most likely go home Monday. Fingers crossed.

Strange Route to a Championship

Posted in IndyCar on September 15, 2024 by Oilpressure

Well, that was an odd race. Going in, Alex Palou had a thirty-three point lead on Will Power – but Palou was starting twenty positions behind Power. Most fans in attendance had visions of checking the scoring pylon to see where each contender stood in relation to the other. That drama lasted for twelve laps. When I saw Power duck into the pits after only twelve circuits, I knew the championship was most likely sealed.
