Welcome To Sonoma Raceway

Welcome to Sonoma Raceway…Finally!! We had two uneventful flights this morning and arrived in San Francisco about two minutes late. However, or plane had to sit on the tarmac about fifteen minutes (or more), while waiting for another plane to push out. I figured, oh well – if that’s our only delay of the day, that’s not that bad. Or so I thought…

Sonoma Preview

For years, longtime readers of this site have known me to use terms like “dust bowl” to describe Sonoma Raceway. I always questioned how the TV announcers could claim it was beautiful, when we viewers from home saw nothing but dead brown grass and dirt. Every time a car dropped a wheel off of the track, a plume of brown dust would fly up into the air.

How Will This Championship Play Out?

After a weekend where I was submersed in football (some good, some very bad), it’s good to refocus on the battle for the Verizon IndyCar Series championship. Sometimes it’s good to push away from racing for a few days. After the last few weekends where we saw Scott Dixon’s lead shrink from sixty-two points to twenty-six and then go back to the current spread of twenty-nine – it was good to forget about it for a few days so that I can look at it with a more refreshed perspective as we go into the final race weekend of the season.

The Alonso Factor

When I first saw that headline, I scoffed. I mean, Mansell was the defending World Champion when he defected from Williams and Formula One. Alonso would be thirteen seasons removed from his last championship if he raced in IndyCar in 2019.

A Schedule We Can Live With

The 2019 IndyCar schedule was released yesterday with few surprises. Most of us by now had deduced that the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas would be joining the slate. And it had already been confirmed that Laguna Seca was added to replace Sonoma as the season finale. So the only real suspense was on what dates would next year’s races take place.

Random Thoughts On Portland

Posted in IndyCar on September 3, 2018 by Oilpressure

What a wild race the Grand Prix of Portland turned out to be! From the drop of the green flag until the checkered flag flew, there was action, suspense and drama all over the 1.967 permanent road circuit. There was a surprise winner in Takuma Sato, a senseless pile-up on the opening lap that seemed to spell doom for Scott Dixon’s championship hopes and a timely (or ill-timed) caution that reshuffled the order.

For the first time since reunification in February 2008, there will be open-wheel racing at Portland International Raceway this weekend. Like Road America and Toronto, Portland was one of those races that fell victim to the reunification of IndyCar in February of 2008.
