Yesterday, we got official confirmation that Ryan Hunter-Reay would continue with Andretti Autosport in the No. 28 DHL entry for the 2021 NTT IndyCar Series season. I don’t think anyone was surprised at all that this happened. Nor do I think anyone was shocked that it was only a one-year extension to the four-year deal that Hunter-Reay and Andretti inked prior to the 2017 season.

We know what the driver lineup for Team Penske looks like heading into the 2021 NTT IndyCar Series season. Rookie Scott McLaughlin will pilot the No. 3 entry for The Captain; while Josef Newgarden, Will Power and Simon Pagenaud will be in their customary respective car numbers 2, 12 and 22. It seems that we are paying tributes to more and more of the people that shaped our sport as time goes on. We got official word this past Wednesday that the 2021 NTT IndyCar Series schedule has already been altered by the pandemic, long before the season has started. The Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, which has traditionally served as the season-opener for the past several years, has been moved from the original date of March 7 to April 25. The season will now kick off on April 11 at Barber Motorsports Park.

Many don’t like it when I compare racing to other sports – football in particular. Aside from the fact that most sports involve a stick and/or a ball and usually two goals (except baseball), and in racing you are controlling a vehicle at a very high rate of speed – there are actually many similarities. All sports demand an excessive amount of concentration and mental toughness. Physical endurance is also a must, along with bravery. But the two most important components are talent and heart, and in no particular order.
