One race is only a snapshot. Sunday’s snapshot shows that Alex Palou is the current points leader in the NTT IndyCar Series, with fifty-three points; while Ryan Hunter-Reay is last in points with a total of six points. I guess that’s your reward for taking the green flag. The tables could turn next week at St. Petersburg where Ryan Hunter-Reay wins and Palou comes down to earth with a last-place finish.

Of all the IndyCar race weekends we have spent at Barber Motorsports Park, this weekend may have featured the best weather of them all. For once, it did not rain a single drop this weekend’s Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama. Normally in the south, a three-day weekend in April will generate some amount of precipitation, but not this weekend. It was cool and cloudy on Friday, and the same for Saturday morning. But by about 10:00 am on Saturday, the skies cleared and it warmed up to be a perfect afternoon. Sunday was pretty much a carbon-copy of Saturday afternoon. The Birmingham Chamber of Commerce did well with their weather machine.

Earlier this week, Norris McDonald reported that NBC would be trimming Paul Tracy’s schedule back to a handful of races on their broadcasts of the NTT IndyCar Series. This is not speculation. He interviewed Tracy who confirmed that he will only be in the broadcast booth a total of six times, including this weekend’s season-opener at Barber Motorsports Park, just east of Birmingham, AL. The other five events will be at Texas, Indianapolis, Nashville, Laguna Seca and Long Beach.

After mentioning replays on Peacock, I’ve had a couple of people ask me about how to access replays of the open test last week at IMS. We have Comcast Xfinity, and the Peacock app is already loaded into our cable box, so your device may be slightly different. Simply go to the Search button and start typing INDY. The practice sessions will immediately appear.

One of the longest running theories regarding what ails the NTT IndyCar Series, is that it lacks a villain. There are a lot of drivers in the paddock that carry a clean-cut image that will be the envy of any potential sponsor, but most of today’s drivers shy away from any type of long-lasting controversy that might cost them a shot at a decent IndyCar ride.
