With every triumph, there is agony. Each and every year, someone gets their heart broken in the Indianapolis 500. Maybe it’s in practice, and a crash causes enough injury to make you miss the race. Two years ago, Stefan Wilson suffered heartbreak. He had already qualified for the race, but an injury on the final Monday practice sidelined him from the race. He hasn’t been back in an Indy car since. Wilson’s heartache, was a lucky break for Graham Rahal. He had been bumped from the race by teammate Jack Harvey just a day earlier. Rahal was hired to drive Wilson’s car in the race.

There are a few words tossed around to describe people for greatness or notoriety. Sometimes, people tend to get a little loose with their interpretations. I have been guilty of that myself. It has been brought to my attention that I tend to overuse the words icon or iconic. I would consider AJ Foyt, Sid Collins or Wilbur Shaw to be icons in the lore of the Indianapolis 500. Although he has won the Indianapolis 500, I’m not sure I would consider Buddy Rice an icon.

Posted in Indianapolis 500 on May 10, 2025 by OilpressureI’d like to say that I’m like the Energizer Bunny—that I “Take a Lickin’ and Keep on Tickin,” (or was that Timex?) but I have realized with my advancing age that keepin’ on tickin’ is a relative concept. I am here in the Media Center and I have taken forays out to our regular spots. I have shopped. I have eaten well. I have seen friends I have not seen since before the Nashville race, where I was out of commission as well. I was just not able to buck the doctor’s instructions and go walk around for a few miles post-surgery because I was captive in the hospital.
A Quick Note Before the Race

Good afternoon from a sunny and warm Indianapolis Motor Speedway. After a good night of sleep and having a leisurely (free) breakfast at the hotel – we arrived at the track around 11:00 this morning. MrsOilpressure is here today and is feeling much better. Although we brought a wheelchair with us, she wanted to leave it in the car. I’m not surprised.
