Earlier today,I referenced how Josef Newgarden and Team Penske did not perform well at this race last year. I also mentioned that they have turned things around for 2022. That was certainly the case today, as Team Penske finished Practice One with all of their cars in the Top Seven. Scott McLaughlin finished fourth, hometown driver Josef Newgarden was fifth and Will Power was seventh.

It’s finally time for the second annual Big Machine Music City Grand Prix. For the second year in a row, the streets of downtown Nashville will come to life this morning with the sounds of race cars and live music. Looking at the weekend schedule, it looks as if there will be an ample supply of both in our hometown. Track activity starts this morning with practice for the Trans-Am Series.

This will be a different post than my usual “Random Thoughts” after a race. That’s because I was not able to see the entire race, or even the replay, before writing this. That’s because I’m writing this from Vanderbilt University Hospital. As I wrote on Friday, on Thursday Susan was sent to the ER of the hospital she has been in off and on for the past two months (which will go nameless).

Update: I had the following post all written up and ready to drop in this morning, explaining how I would be going up to IMS by myself this morning (I sometimes write these a few nights ahead). In that original post, I casually mentioned that Susan is a little under the weather, and she would sit this one out to rest up for next weekend’s Music City Grand Prix.
Why We Don’t Want This to Happen

We all saw the news on Monday morning, when Team Penske announced a contingency plan for this weekend’s race if Josef Newgarden is not cleared to drive on Thursday. Santino Ferrucci is currently on standby, in case Newgarden still has some lingering effects from his crash at Iowa, while leading last Sunday. Newgarden appeared normal in his interview with NBC shortly after his crash, but he apparently fainted afterward and cut the back of his head. The word concussion has never been mentioned by IndyCar or team officials – only by those speculating.
