The saga of Will Power’s summer took another interesting turn this past weekend when he became the only Team Penske driver to win a race this season. With two races to go in the NTT IndyCar Series season; Will Power currently sits in sixth in the championship standings, while teammates Scott McLaughlin and Josef Newgarden are eleventh and eighteenth respectively – yet Power is the one whose future is in question.

Greetings from 38,000 feet! As I type this on Thursday, Susan and I are on a flight to the Pacific Northwest. Unfortunately, it’s not what you think. We are not headed to Portland for the Bitnile.com Grand Prix of Portland – the site of this weekend’s NTT IndyCar Series race. Instead, our ultimate destination is Boise, Idaho – to see my one and only grandchild. He turned three in June, and this will be only my third time to see him.
Is This Finally IndyCar’s New Day?

My Thursday morning at work looked like it was going to be fairly uneventful. I was going to be gathering information for month-end reports to be done today. I answered a few e-mails, then headed for the break-room for a cup of coffee. When I returned to my office, I sat down and checked my personal e-mail. It was there that I saw an e-mail from IndyCar Communications.

Some people consider me an old dinosaur, who will never change my views on anything. After all, my mantra throughout my life is Change is Bad! I am rapidly closing in on 67, I just started collecting social security and I will be retiring from my day job in less than six months. The chances of me being set in my ways are pretty solid.
Random Thoughts on Iowa

One thing you can say for the double-header weekend at Iowa – the racing was sure better than last year. IndyCar and Firestone both made the proper adjustments to not have a repeat of last year’s twin duds. It’s interesting how you can run the same drivers on the same track, two days in a row – yet get different results.

The annual double-header at Iowa Speedway is coming up this weekend. To us older fans, it seems like yesterday that Iowa Speedway opened its doors. It’s hard to believe that it was September of 2006, when the track held its first race – a Hooters Pro Cup Series race won by Woody Howard. The Indy racing League held its first race at Iowa the following June, when Dario Franchitti won for Andretti Green Racing.

It’s odd how something doesn’t work for one track, but is successful at another. From 2006 through 2010, the NTT IndyCar Series ran at Watkins Glen over the Independence Day weekend. Even though the racing was very good, the holiday weekend events were very poorly attended. When the plug was pulled on the event after the 2010 season, many cited the Fourth of July weekend as the reason for the sparse crowds. It served as a cautionary tale to not schedule events over or near the mid-summer holiday weekend.
