Yesterday’s Sonsio Grand Prix at Road America had a little bit of everything. There was drama, strategy, outstanding driving, bone-headed moves by drivers and teams along with a helping of good old-fashioned speed. Alex Palou is on another planet right now. He has won three of the past four races. The one he didn’t win was Indianapolis, and he fought back from adversity almost halfway through the race and still finished fourth.

Sometimes qualifying features few surprises, and pretty much mirrors what we saw in practice. Such was not the case in today’s NTT IndyCar Series qualifying for tomorrow’s Sonsio Grand Prix at Road America. Josef Newgarden had been mostly average in the first two practices, but was the only Team Penske representative in the Firestone Fast Six.
Changes at Road America
Posted in IndyCar on June 17, 2023 by OilpressureI have to say I’m exhausted, but I’m still having fun. This year we got a slow golf cart—this is great news for me because George can’t drive like a maniac. I’m still trying to get my stamina back. The steps to the Media Center were daunting last year, this year I can just walk right up, so I’m getting better and I am getting more energy.

Never pay any attention to what I say. I thought this morning’s practice started at 10:55 am. Well, that’s correct if you live in the Eastern Time Zone. Road America, however, on in Central time. You’d think living in the Central Time Zone in Nashville, I’d be used to making the mental conversion. We arrived at the track this morning at 10:20, thinking we had plenty of time for the 10:55 practice. I told Susan that the cars on track sounded like Indy cars. They were.
Road America Friday Wrap-Up

It always does my heart (and ego) good to see my choice for the weekend’s race win, do well in the first practice session of the weekend. Not only did Alexander Rossi do well, he led the first session with a time of 1:41.7790. How does that compare with last year’s speed, now that the new surface is down? Rossi was on the pole at Road America last year, with a time of 1:44.8656. By the time Qualifying rolls around tomorrow afternoon, I imagine more time will be whittled down.
