Random Thoughts on Portland

Sometimes you get a surprisingly thrilling race like last weekend’s race at Worldwide Technology Raceway, and sometimes you get a dud. The 2024 Bitnile.com Grand Prix of Portland was something of a dud – at least in my opinion. It’s bad when qualifying is much more exciting than the race itself.

Portland Preview

I will admit that until a couple of weeks ago, I thought the Bitnile.com Grand Prix of Portland was later. I am used to it being the next of the last race of the season, and I thought it was sandwiched in between Milwaukee and Nashville. I was listening to Trackside and Curt Cavin said something about Portland immediately after Gateway. I chuckled because I was certain he was wrong. When nothing else was said about it, I checked the schedule and realized who was wrong – me.

Who Exactly is “Penske Material”?

It has been over a week since we learned the surprise move of the silly-season, that David Malukas is headed to AJ Foyt Racing next season. Since then, there has been all types of speculation. Some of it involves the futures of current Foyt drivers Santino Ferrucci and Sting Ray Robb. Other speculation focuses on what motivated Malukas to go there. Few want to believe that it was simply the trajectory of the team, based on their technical alliance with Team Penske. They maintain that there is more than just a technical alliance there. Many believe that Team Penske will use the Foyt team as a farm system or satellite team to groom future drivers.

The 2024 edition of the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 turned out to be probably the best IndyCar race I’ve seen at World Wide Technology Raceway (Gateway) that I’ve seen since the the NTT IndyCar Series returned to the 1.25–mile egg-shaped oval, just across the bridge from St. Louis.

Gateway Preview

Other than the COVID year of 2020, this will be the first time that Susan and I will miss the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 since the NTT IndyCar Series returned to World Wide Technology Raceway (WWTR) at Gateway in 2017. We have never been to the Milwaukee Mile, and when it appeared on this year’s schedule – I wanted to make sure we were there. Our budget won’t allow us to do both, so Gateway was somewhat expendable – at least for this year.

Many Questions, With Few Answers

Yesterday while I was at lunch, I got a text from a friend of mine in Indianapolis saying “Malukas to Foyt? Seems like an odd choice considering his options”. I looked at that text and was stunned. Before getting that text, I had no idea that there was even a slight possibility that David Malukas would sign a multi-year deal to drive for AJ Foyt Enterprises, starting in 2025. This announcement yesterday has provided a lot of questions, but very few answers.

My IndyCar on FOX Wishlist for 2025

When the IndyCar TV package was up for bid, I was fairly vocal that I wanted the package to stay with NBC. After all, Change is Bad! We learned in mid-June that FOX will be taking over the TV rights for IndyCar, and it was way too good of a deal to pass up. After all, every single race on network TV and significantly more cash than NBC was offering, was practically a dream scenario if you are IndyCar.
