There is no denying that neither of the two races for the Hy-Vee IndyCar Weekend at Iowa Speedway were very compelling. The track repaved the corners adding a ton of grip. To take that into account, Firestone brought a new tire for the right side of the cars. IndyCar lowered downforce by about 10%. The result of all of these factors were two races where the drivers found it especially difficult to pass.

I don’t know if it is age or the remnant of chemo, but I have a very short tolerance for heat. The weather is pretty nice—there’s generally a breeze blowing and the occasional cloud cover makes for a pretty comfortable day.
Another Race Morning at Iowa

Good morning from an already balmy Iowa Speedway. The weather forecasts have been spot-on all weekend, so if the accuracy of the weather people continues – that means today will be the hottest day since we got here on Thursday. The high temperature for today is projected to be 94°. Fortunately, the green flag flies at 11:30 am CDT, meaning it will only be around 87° at that time.

Well, that was very strange. After Friday’s practice, word started going around that we were most likely going to see a parade tonight. The 10% reduction in downforce and the new tire that Firestone brought were not working as expected with the repaving job in the corners, and passing was going to be at a premium. For the first 176 laps, that turned out to be true.
