Every time we come to IMS, at some point I find myself looking up at the suite just south of Gasoline Alley where George and I were married in 2012. It is even more meaningful to me today, because today is our wedding anniversary. 12 years ago today, George and I finally joined our lives together at probably our favorite place on earth—the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Good morning from what was a fog-encased Indianapolis Motor Speedway earlier this morning. When I looked out the window of our hotel, I was having trouble seeing cars in the parking lot. I figured they would delay the 8:30 am practice, and they did – by about thirty minutes.
We finally ended up with a day where everyone’s full attention was on the track, instead of the weather apps. For the first time all week, we finally had a day not interrupted by weather. If there was a day for that to happen, this was it.
After a very disjointed week of practice due to weather, Fast Friday promises to be just as disjointed. Tuesday’s practice started at 9:00 am, and lasted for 26 minutes before it was halted by rain. Not another lap was turned for the rest of the day.
Thursday dawned with promise that we would be able to get in a full eight hours of running with no interruptions for rain. The blue skies this morning assured me of that.
You may or may not be aware that there is a new concession vendor at IMS. Levy Restaurant’s took over the concessions in 2014. I’m assuming it was a ten-year deal, because there is a new vendor for 2024. Aramark is now responsible for feeding us, at least in The Pagoda Plaza.
As I spent most of yesterday watching raindrops hit the pavement of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, I was taken back to my childhood. Beginning in 1967, my father decided to add to our Month of May ritual by attending Pole Day each year. It was him, my two brothers and me. I don’t ever recall my mother going to qualifying, but I could be wrong on that.
