Random Thoughts on Portland

No one ever said that a race had to have a lot of daring passes to be interesting. While fans of some series insist that there must be lots of rubbin’ to be a race, fans of the NTT IndyCar Series realize that they can actually have both. The Grand Prix of Portland provided something for everyone.

Portland Preview

The NTT IndyCar Series begins a final flurry of action this weekend as the so-called “west coast swing” gets underway. The first of the three west coast races over three weekends will take place at Portland. Normally, the season would be wrapping up next weekend at Laguna Seca, but concerns over COVID forced promoters for Long Beach to move it from their traditional April date to the end of the season this year. In hindsight, it may have been better ton run it in April.

“Al Unser, Jr: A Checkered Past”

The Halloween decorations are already up, the NFL season has not yet started and there are three races left in the IndyCar season. That means it’s a perfect time to start thinking about what to give the IndyCar fan in your household for Christmas. I say that, because I’ve already told Susan about the next IndyCar-related book that I want. That gives me motivation to finish the two books I bought this past May; Indy Split by John Oreovicz and Hello, I’m Paul Page: It’s Race Day in Indianapolis, obviously by Paul Page. I was anxious to read both and started them both at the same time. They are both good books, but I put them both down by mid-summer. I need to finish them both by Christmas, to make room for an upcoming book that promises to be an excellent read.

Changing Times at Andretti Autosport

On Wednesday, I mentioned that Romain Grosjean will be moving on to Andretti Autosport for next season, after making his IndyCar debut this season for Dale Coyne. I realize that the full name of Grosjean’s team is Dale Coyne Racing with Rick Ware Racing; but I still consider this a Dale Coyne entry. So for simplicity sake, let’s just call his current team Dale Coyne Racing.

The Joys of the IndyCar Silly Season

With the NTT IndyCar Series in the midst of a two-weekend break, it’s not surprising that a silly season rumor has become reality during this down-time. Chances are, there may be others before the series reconvenes in Portland next weekend to kick off the so-called west coast swing to conclude the season.
