After two full days of practice – today is suddenly Fast Friday already. How did that happen? I still haven’t gotten used to practice starting on Tuesday, instead of Monday. This year, practice started on Wednesday. My hope is that this is a one-time deal due to all of the unique circumstances surrounding this year’s race. I hope that it will revert to at least Tuesday in future years. Personally, I prefer a full week of practice starting on Monday, leading into Qualifying Weekend, but at least put it back to Tuesday.

The 104th Running of the Indianapolis 500 finally gets going in earnest today, with the start of practice this morning at 11:00 am EDT. Each of the three practice sessions this week will be streamed live on NBC Sports Gold. We have waited a long time for this day. Although it is tough to imagine fans not being present, it is understandable. Personally, I’m glad the race is still running and I’m looking forward to the next week and a half. August isn’t May, but it’s better than nothing.

Note from George:  With the Indianapolis 500 practice just  a couple of days away, I wanted to give Susan a chance today to share some really good news that we have recently gotten, before we get into hard-core IndyCar racing for the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, she has also gotten some rather unpleasant news. I guess we are learning to take the bad with the good. – GP

Some days I wake up in the morning and I forget I have cancer–that my life was the way it was before; before I worried about Tumor Markers, cell counts, ports, and the like. I try to stay positive most of the time, but I’m having a hard time this week, although I have some wonderful news to share here in a bit.

First of all, I would like to thank everyone who contacted me via phone call, text, e-mail, Twitter, Facebook or commenting on this website. July was a very rough month for us. Susan’s cancer diagnosis at the first of the month was bad enough, but then my mother suddenly passed away early last week to put a put a period on just a horrible month. Support and concern from the IndyCar community has been incredible and a huge help. Many of you contacted me in some form or fashion to express your condolences. Paul Dalbey and his wife, Kelli, even sent us flowers – which was very thoughtful and much-appreciated.

How Good is Scott Dixon?

Racing fans love to bench race, and there’s no more popular topic than “Greatest of All Time.” As Scott Dixon continues to rise through the record books, people naturally want to compare his achievements to the stars of Indy car racing who preceded him. Dixon’s statistics put him in heady company with the likes of A.J. Foyt, Mario and Michael Andretti and the Unser brothers, but some folks tend to be dismissive of drivers from the modern era given how radically different the sport is compared to 50 or 60 years ago.

George and Susan have a lot going on right now, so in the tradition of Roberto ‘Supersub’ Moreno, I offered to contribute a guest column or two to help lighten their load.
