The first two practices at Road America are in the books. It’s always hard to tell if a Friday practice is indicative of what we will see in qualifying and the race, or if it is a case of teams sorting out their cars and not really out to show speed.

Welcome to Road America!

Good morning from a cool, but sunbathed Road America!. It is currently 60-degrees, with a projected high of 71. The Elkhart Lake Chamber of Commerce could not have produced a better day to welcome track-goers to the famous four mile road course just to the southeast of town. I really think Road America may be more closely situated to Plymouth, just south of the track – but Elkhart Lake gets the credit, even though Plymouth is a quaint little town in its own right. But I digress…

Yesterday, Susan and I landed at Milwaukee for our annual trip to Road America and the REV Group Grand Prix. Our flight left Nashville at 5:45 am yesterday and went through Kansas City. Sometimes you need to leave early and take a different route in order to save a ton of cash. Even with a layover in KC, we landed at 9:55 – which gave us plenty of time to relax. We actually went by the track yesterday for a bit to check in and scout out a good seat in the Media Center. We also picked up our golf cart and got all of that knocked out of the way, so that when things got going in earnest today – we could focus on the task at hand, racing.

We are now past the halfway point of the 2019 NTT IndyCar Series season. Nine races have been run, with eight remaining. There have been a few pleasant surprises, a few disappointments and a few head-scratchers. With a week away from here, I had a chance to relax. But how did I relax during my Father’s Day weekend to push away from racing? By watching Le Mans, of course. Still, I was able to do some other things that I enjoy that didn’t involve motorsports at all. But I also caught myself thinking back and reflecting on what we’ve seen so far.

“Rapid Response”– A Review

I have mentioned before that one of the perks of being a lowly IndyCar blogger is that occasionally I get asked to review certain things. I’m not quite sure why my opinion on books, TV specials, DVDs and movies would matter to anyone; but I still get asked. As I’ve also said; if I don’t like what I’ve been asked to sample – most of the time I’ll just let it go and not write anything. I don’t want to trash something that someone was nice enough to ask me to sample.

Random Thoughts on Texas

As Saturday night’s DXC Technology 600 at Texas Motor Speedway came to an exciting finish, my initial thoughts were that this was a race that should please everyone, the oval fans as well as the oval haters. But all it took was one check of social media to learn how wrong I was. The fans of ovals found it boring and strung out, while the haters still hated without pointing to any real reason.

For the second time in less than three months, the NTT IndyCar Series heads to the Lone Star State. The first was for the lengthy road course in Austin at the impressive Circuit of the Americas (COTA), won by rookie Colton Herta. Now the series returns for the high-banked 1.5-mile oval Texas Motor Speedway (TMS) in Fort Worth.
