Excuse the tardiness of this post, but I was having computer issues. The Wi-fi was not showing up on my computer. It’s hard to blog without the internet. Talking to others, some were having the issue and some weren’t. Whatever the case, it is obviously working now.

It is probably not a surprise that Will Power has won the pole for Saturday’s IndyCar Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Power has won twice here in the four previous races and has always been strong on the road course at IMS. But the surprise is that rookie Robert Wickens is starting second and his Schmidt Peterson Motorsports teammate, James Hinchclffe is starting fourth. They had both struggled in practice and neither was expected to be in the Firestone Fast Six.

Good Afternoon From IMS!

First of all, I apologize for being so late for posting on here today. I arrived in Indianapolis at around 11:30 and stopped off to check into the hotel. By the time I got to the track, Practice Two for the Verizon IndyCar  Series was just about to get underway. I wandered down to Stand J, so that I could watch the cars coming down the long straightaway and make the sharp right-hander heading into the road course portion of the circuit. Here is a video I took from Practice Two.

As you read this, I am on my way to Indianapolis for the first of three weekends in a row at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway; beginning this week with the IndyCar Grand Prix to be run on the IMS road course. I am driving solo. Once again, Susan’s company scheduled a mandatory training session late this week. She was able to get a cheap flight this evening when she gets back, so I’ll be picking her up in Indianapolis around 10:00 tonight. What is it with companies that schedule things in May? Don’t they realize the Month of May is going on?

By Paul Dalbey

Note from George: Though he still hasn’t decided when to jump back into the IndyCar blogosphere, my good friend Paul Dalbey from More Front Wing still has things he wants to say regarding IndyCar and the Indianapolis 500 in particular. That’s a good thing because it gives me a break throughout the busy month of May. It’s a win-win for both of us. Paul and I see eye-to-eye on most things, but we had a major disagreement on one segment of his post that you will see below. But neither of us are thin-skinned, so we can handle disagreements and still remain friends. It’s a shame that everyone can’t handle differences in opinions without ruining a friendship. – GP

Over the course of 101 runnings of the Indianapolis 500, 767 drivers have qualified to start the great race (which doesn’t include another 50 or so who drove as relief drivers yet never qualified), but only 71 men have made the final left turn into victory lane (69 if you really want to be technical about it). Of those 71 drivers who have reached the pinnacle of motorsports, I’m willing to bet more than a solid handful are names that are not commonly known, let alone revered, by race fans today.

The 2018 Indianapolis 500 Trivia Contest

Here we go again! It’s time for the annual Oilpressure.com Indianapolis 500 Trivia Contest. If you have taken part in this contest in recent years, you know it is for serious fans. If you go through the archives and pull up the contests from the early years of this site, you’ll see that the questions were relatively easy and multiple choice. The problem with that was that too many people were getting all but one or two correct and there would be ties. I would have to go back to see who got their answers in first to break the tie, which led to some unhappy people.

The First Unser

The IMS Museum is currently featuring an exhibit on The Amazing Unsers. All nine of the cars driven to Victory Lane by one of the Unsers at IMS are on hand. Bobby Unser won the Indianapolis 500 three times, his little brother Al is one of three four-time winners and Al’s son Al Unser, Jr. won the race twice. No family in Indianapolis 500 history comes close to the domination that the Unsers have had at Indianapolis.
