After six months and sixteen races already completed, the 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series championship is down to one race. Technically, there are seven drivers still mathematically alive for the championship. But it would take nothing short of a miracle for sixth-place Alexander Rossi or seventh-place Graham Rahal to walk away Sunday holding the Astor Cup.

Who Will Win The IndyCar Championship?

There is one indisputable fact that I have learned as I grow older – as I age, each year of my life seems much shorter than the year before. When I was four years-old, it was an absolute eternity from that Christmas to the next one when I was five. When I was six, I attended my first Indianapolis 500 in 1965. My father took his father and brother in 1966, so when May of 1967 rolled around – it had been two years, which represented a quarter of my life at the time. Once again, it seemed like an eternity.

With two races to go in the Verizon IndyCar Series season and a very tight championship battle; most people were expecting an exciting race on Sunday at Watkins Glen. They were not disappointed. It’s a shame that more people did not make the trek to western New York to see it in person (but who am I to complain as I watched it from the comfort of my den?). Ticket sales had been weak leading up to the race. Cold temperatures and threatening skies didn’t help anyone waiting until the last minute to make the decision to go. It’s too bad. Those that were there got to see a heck of a race.
Watkins Glen Preview

As this championship winds down with two races to go, the Verizon IndyCar Series heads to Watkins Glen International, in the Finger Lakes region of western New York. At this time last year, Susan and I told each other we would be at this race. However, life and budgets got in the way over the past year and it was obvious before the season even started that it was not going to happen this year. Hopefully next year we can make it, since we’ve never been there.
