Carb-Day Wrap-up
Nothing really changed in the Top-Five for today’s Carb Day practice. Josef Newgarden was the fastest driver, but how much do we really learn from this? What we do know is that Graham Rahal and Ryan Hunter-Reay both had fires in their cars, with Hunter-Reay’s causing damage to body work. Takuma Sato also had some type of mechanical issue that ended his day early.
I am not kidding when I say that the biggest on-track attraction was the Oscar Meyer Weiner 500. Six Weiner Mobiles “raced” around the 2.5-mile oval swapping passes. It was a photo finish reminiscent of the finish of the 2006 Indianapolis 500 that saw Sam Hornish seemingly come out of nowhere to pass Marco Andretti.
The crowd was really into it. It was amusing to see all of us amateur “journalists” crowding the window of the media center, while all of the real professional journalists refused to even look up and have any fun with it.
I’ll admit, I scoffed at it at first, but it actually created a lot of buzz nationwide. Friends of mine that are not race fans were texting me this morning, making sure I got pictures. If this is what it takes to generate buzz – so be it.
Josef Newgarden’s crew won the Pit Stop Competition over Will Power.
That will do it for us today. We are headed to meet up with the first of my two brothers headed here for the weekend. There will be no post here on Saturday, but we will be here first thing Sunday morning on Race Day. It’s the Month of May!

RHR’s damage was more than just body work. They are going to a backup car. Not good for the former winner!

I was hoping you would have a photo of the OM mobiles. I thought the idea was hilarious and wish I had taped extra after Practice. My brother and I had OM Weiner whistles when we were kids. LOL

Q: Why a Weiner-mobile race?
A: The track is too narrow for tenderloin-mobiles!
I have to admit that it was stupidly awesome to twice see (in my so-called adulthood) an OM Weiner-mobile driving down a street or highway …
