An Enjoyable Extra IMS Weekend

Good Sunday morning from our Indy-area hotel in Plainfield by the airport. We started staying here race-weekend last year, when I ended up missing Indy because I was in the hospital. But George came, and I don’t say that in a jabbing way. I wanted him to come. But since then, we’ve been staying in Plainfield anytime we come up here. It’s cheaper and the drive is not as bad as it sounds. I guess I just let the secret out.

We enjoyed this race more than we expected to. It was sort of an extension of May. We have a circle of friends that we see at practically every race we go to, but there are some we only see at Indy—so it’s always good to catch up with them.

We made it to most of George’s spots this weekend, except for Charlie Brown’s. We ate dinner last night at Dawson’s, and lunch yesterday at the Workingman’s Friend. We aren’t going to the Nascar race today, so we will get to Long’s Donuts and the Mug & Bun for a root beer on our way out of town. We’ve found a new place in Plainfield that we like—the Coachman, that George has now put on our rotation. I don’t get the thrill out of all these places that he does, but they are good. I just wish we could have some more variety. But Workingman’s Friend and the Coachman are both new for this year, so I guess I can’t complain about the same old places too much.

The weather was good for the race. It was hot and humid, but nothing like last week in Nashville. It is mid-August in the Midwest, so it’s supped to be hot. It stormed yesterday morning before the race—then again late yesterday afternoon during the Nascar race. But for the IndyCar race it was about as good as it could be.

George mentioned that we are going to a cake shop this morning. The full name is The Cake Bake Shop, and it is very famous in the cake world that I am part of. I am on a spy mission from the bakery I do part time work for. Their original location is in Broad Ripple, but they now have a much bigger location in Carmel. Right now, I’m not sure which one we are going to.

For those wondering how I’m feeling, since I only went to the Nashville race on Friday—I feel a lot better. I felt terrible last weekend, but George took me to the doctor last Monday. He reduced some of my meds, and I feel so much better. A lot of the meds were for neuropathy, brought on by chemo. They didn’t seem to help that much, but they zap your strength and make me feel lifeless and slightly confused. I now feel better than I have in a couple of months.

We are home for a week, then it’s off to our last race of the season at Gateway. I can’t believe the season’s almost over. It just seemed like a few weeks ago that George left me behind to go to Texas. That’s one I really wanted to go to. When he asked if I wanted to go, I didn’t feel like it so he didn’t get me credentialed. But by the time he left, I was feeling good and wanted to go. By then it was too late. Maybe next year?

Here are some photos I took during qualifying on Friday, and before the race yesterday. I made sure I got a couple with Tony Kanaan. Even though he say’s he’s retired, he is still my son’s favorite driver.

Glad you are feeling better! I’ll be very interested in your thoughts on Cake Bake . I think it’s wonderful & would recommend about anything on their menu. The Broad Ripple location is a bit frilly for guys, but hey – Scott Dixon & James Hinchcliffe have visited there! Enjoy & safe travels home.

Glad you are feeling better Susan and that you two had a good time this weekend. I guess I’m going to have to go to the Coachman next time I’m in Indy… my father and I stayed near it the last time we went to the 500 but just never went in.

Catch y’all at Texas next year!

Susan , I really enjoy white on white cake with red roses , since childhood it has been a treat on my birthday. What I can not consume in a few days is frozen for later enjoyment . I looked at the cake bake web site . I am a simple man with simple tastes and as you are a cake expert can you explain to me why an 8 inch rather simple white cake starts at $115.00? I understand labor and material costs and locally I believe my wife pays $35.00 more or less. What am I missing, is the Cake Bake Shop soooo much better and if so why
. Thanks for your expert opinion and education

I haven’t tried the cake slices I got yet, will do on Tuesday. Part of what figures into these costs is building rental, salaries, premium ingredients (you can tell the difference between Kroger brand butter and a premium brand like KerryGold), skill set, and what the market will bear. When I was doing cakes a few years ago, I charged pretty low prices—comparatively speaking—but I had very little overhead and my kitchen was always in a state of getting ready to bake, baking, cooling, or decorating. If I picked it up again I would double the prices I used to charge because I now know that my skills are worth it. So I think I kind of answered your question. The real answer is “What the market will bear.”

  4. Hi Susan. Thanks for your photos. Seeing Tony, even in a photo, brightens my day. I’ve been a fan since he came to the US from Brazil. It is good to hear that you are feeling much better.

My fave cake is German chocolate, but not what I find in the markets or in many bakeries. I want real German chocolate, cooked coconut icing on top and in between the layers. What’s with the chocolate icing that I found out here!!
