It’s Race Day at IMS!

Good morning from a cloudy, but pleasant Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I always feel just a little disingenuous claiming “It’s Race Day at IMS” when it is time for the GMR Grand Prix, but it’s a fact. Today’s race at IMS is a points-paying race and now pays just as many points as the Indianapolis 500 will in two weeks.

As we saw from yesterday’s qualifying, there are many storylines that will unfold in today’s race. Will the usual crop of winners end up taking over and end up on top as always, or will the race produce a first-time winner like Christian Lundgaard, or a two-time winner like Felix Rosenqvist?

Graham Rahal always moves up a lot after qualifying poorly. Although he qualified behind teammates Lundgaard and Jack Harvey, he still qualified eighth. Might today end his long winless drought?

It was one year ago this weekend that Colton Herta won his last race. Can he recapture some magic?

There is a good bit of buzz around the track this morning. It will never rival what we will see in two weeks, but I think the locals have a good day to come out – so long as the weather holds up.

We are going to go grab a bite to eat, and then head to the pits for the Morning Warmup at 11:15 EDT, shown live on Peacock. Then the race broadcast will be shown on NBC at 3:30 pm EDT.

Susan will have a post up here tomorrow as she scouts around some of the new items for fans this may. I will be back here after the race with a race recap and then my usual Random Thoughts post on Monday.

  1. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think this is the first time all three Rayhal cars have qualified in the top 10. While I’m still waiting for the ECR drivers to catch fire (not literally), I wouldn’t be too upset to see a Rayhal driver or two on the podium!

  2. I’m sitting on my couch awaiting the beginning of the NBC show.
