It’s Race Day At Pocono!

Good morning from a sun-bathed Pocono Raceway! The temperature is a perfect 77-degrees and is not expected to not go much higher. There is not a cloud in the sky. No one in the local area can use weather as an excuse for not coming today.

One quick note to pass along, Ryan Hunter-Reay was examined this morning and has been cleared to drive. After seeing him carried off yesterday, I’m not sure I expected to see him in the car today. With Hunter-Reay, Helio Castroneves and Ed Carpenter starting in the back of the field – there are some awfully fast cars back there.

One of the perks of being a lowly blogger s that we are occasionally offered pace car rides on race weekend. Paul and I were offered such an opportunity for this morning so we got here early for out two-lap trip around the track. Since we are using his points for the hotel room, I let him sit up front. I’ll blame the helmet for the multiple chins in this photo.

As we began our second lap, we exceeded 140 mph just before we braked for Turn One. As we were slammed against the right side of the car, it seemed like we kept turning…and turning. It’s an exhilarating way to start the day.

After that we wandered over to the vintage car garage, just as they were about to take to the track for the morning festivities. I took lots of photos and will post them at the bottom.

Even though Castroneves is starting in the back of the field, I still like his chances and am sticking with him as my pick to win. His hiccup for the weekend was yesterday, when he crashed on his qualifying run.

I’m also thinking that today’s race may be the best race of the season. There are a lot of racy cars out there and it should make for many exciting moments.

I’ll be back here after the race with a full recap, and I’ll also have my normal “Random Thoughts” here tomorrow. Please follow me on Twitter at @Oilpressureblog for photos and comments this morning and during the race – assuming I can get reception, and that’s assuming there will be a big crowd here. Let’s hope so.

Enjoy these photos of vintage cars and check back after the race. Enjoy the race, everyone.
