GP Race Day At IMS

Good morning from a breezy and cold Indianapolis Motor Speedway. We woke up to rain this morning, but the sun is trying to break through, and the clouds are giving way to blustery winds straight out of the north. I’ve probably been colder here, but it’s been a while. Race morning for the 1992 Indianapolis 500 was probably colder. I can remember one qualifying day in either 1967 or 1968 when all I could think about was getting warm – but I was also only about ten years old too.

Since I last posted, there has been some news. The cars of Graham Rahal and Josef Newgarden were found to be underweight in post-qualifying inspection. Instead of starting third and fifth respectively, those two cars will start at the back of the field. Ouch!

Graham Rahal has shown he can pass with this new aero kit configuration. We’ll get a good chance to see how good he really is today. He will be fun to watch.

I would like to say that there is a buzz about the grounds, but there is not – not yet anyway. Those that planned on walking up and buying tickets are probably waiting to see how much it will warm up. They may have a long wait. It is currently 45-degrees and the projected high, around 3:30 when the green flag for the Verizon IndyCar Series flies, is only 51. Fortunately, we knew it would be cold and we brought the right clothes for once.

I suppose it’s because it’s Race Day, but part of the strange vibe here is that it seems like Sunday. I keep having to remind myself that it’s Saturday.

Our dinner plans last night were limited to something that did not include Main Street in Speedway. We had decided to go to Sarah Fisher’s 1911 Grill, next to her new karting place on Main Street. Unfortunately, there was a festival with bands and beer and Main Street was closed off. We thought about parking and walking, but there were no places to be found. We’re old, so rather than deal with the crowds at the end of a long day, we settled for the Mug-n-Bun. A Coney Dog and a frosty mug of their homemade root beer was a nice way to top off the day.

Speaking of Sarah Fisher’s karting place, we are going their tomorrow to race with Paul Dalbey after breakfast at Charlie Brown’s. I hope we don’t barf on the track. It should be interesting.

There is a full day of track activity. The Indy Lights warmup is at 9:45 this morning, followed by the Pro Mazda Race #2 at 10:30. The Verizon IndyCar Series has their final warmup, followed by the second USF2000 race and the second Indy Lights race before the green flag falls for the IndyCar race sometime after 3:30 (all times EDT).

  1. I had rather be at a chilly IMS than most other places. Bad news about Graham and Newgarden. Two of my favorites.

    They have an oval track for karting at the facility you have mentioned, which I think is pretty unique for a kart track. But then, this is Indianapolis we’re talking about.

    I don’t know it it has already transpired to you, George, that since you have left for trackside, Watkins Glen has been officially confirmed as the replacement for the abandoned Boston GP. I can only say it’s pretty admirable that IndyCar has organized this so quickly.
