Mid-Day Barber Update

The second practice is now complete. It took place with only two slight incidents. One was when Rodolfo Gonzalez spun and then later on, Luca Filippi got off course. Both red-flags required little downtime. The Top-Five showed no real surprises. Will Power led the session, followed by Helio Castroneves, Scott Dixon, Simon Pagenaud and Sébastien Bourdais. Again, the fastest Honda was seventh quick – this time by James Hinchcliffe.

Susan and I went over to the backstretch to watch the second practice. The grounds crew have had to do some miraculous work to make the grounds passable for all of the foot traffic. The manicured grass of yesterday has become a quagmire today with all of the rain we had overnight. But fortunately, no more rain has fallen since early morning.

For those that laugh at us that keep mentioning that Barber Motorsports Park is such a gorgeous facility, they really need to come see it for themselves. The scoffing would stop then. There aren’t many tracks where fans can stand in a scenic wooded area and watch racing just below them.

From the moment you arrive at the main entrance, you can sense at how well these grounds are maintained. There is not a square foot left unattended at this track.

I was able to get a couple of shots during practice of Scott Dixon and James Hinchcliffe, but I didn’t shoot much. I don’t like the idea of watch a race (or practice) through a camera lens. But again, when you look at Dixon in the that good-looking Coca-Cola car snaking his way amongst the trees, it’s a sight you don’t normally expect at a race track.

I’ll have a post up here after qualifying. Then Susan will have one of her posts from her unique (read:quirky) point of view and a tour of the grounds here, first thing in the morning. Check back later this afternoon, though.

  1. Hope you guys are enjoying a unique (read: quirky) weekend down there. See you bright and early (or, as bright and early as I can manage to leave F-town, plus three hours).

  2. Thank you for the Coca-Cola 9 pic. I’d be broke(r) if IndyCar put out diecasts like NASCAR does.
