Race Day Two at Milwaukee

Good morning from the Dairy State of Wisconsin! It’s Race Day II of the Hy-Vee Milwaukee Mile 250s. We really like this track. Not only is it very historic, it has aged well. Few things give away the fact that it is more than 120 years-old. The old covered wooden stands were demolished about 25 years ago, and held about half as many people. These modern stands are uncovered, but have nice amenities. All rows have backs like IMS, but the upper rows even have seats with individual backs with armrests – much like most current NFL stadiums.

The track is probably one of the most urban tracks we’ve been to, even more so than IMS. As you are driving down West Greenfield Ave, you are in the midst of West Allis with nice shops and restaurants. Suddenly out of nowhere, you hit the intersection of Greenfield and 84th Street and you suddenly see the Turn One stands to your left. The track sits in the middle of the Wisconsin State Fairgrounds, which are also nicely kept up. It’s hard to believe that just a few years ago, there were some whispers that this grand old track might be demolished. Let’s hope that never happens.

People here are still buzzing about Saturday’s race and the crowd. They should. Both were excellent. We came across more traffic this morning, but we arrived justa few hours before the green flag – as opposed to yesterday’s long day. The cooler temps for today and last night’s good race may create a better than expected walk-up crowd today.

We are going to go roam the paddock and meet up with some friends. Please check back here after this afternoon’s race on USA Network, which begins at 1:30 pm local time (CDT) with a 2:00 pm CDT green-flag.
