Welcome to Iowa Speedway!

Welcome to Iowa Speedway. From what we have seen so far, we are very impressed. We arrived at our hotel after an uneventful, but long (10.25 hours) drive. It was a little longer because our GPS diverted us around some road closures due to flooding in Illinois and Missouri.

We are staying about 30 miles out in what appears to be a brand new hotel. We slept in and feel much better than last night. We arrived at the track around 11:00 this morning, and check-in was seamless. It’s always nice when the track has heard of us – especially when it’s a track we’ve never been to.

The track itself looks much smaller in person than it does on television. I heard Curt Cavin on Trackside the other night say that the cars here look like they are going much faster than at Indianapolis. After seeing the track in person, I believe it.

We are going to go walk around and explore this track, but from what I can tell, this is going to be a very fun track to watch a race from. The amenities here are as advertised. It’s a very nice track, with the charm of an older track. I’ll be able to report more late this afternoon when I do a wrap-up of the day.

The rubber-in session starts at 2:45 CDT, and then the full-fledged practice runs from 3:30 CDT until 5:00. I will close out the day here after practice with a wrap-up of my impressions of practice and the track, in general. For the rest of the weekend; I will give a quick welcome post in the morning. Then Susan has a post she will put up just after lunch, that she is already working on. Then wil practice, qualifying, concerts and Race One, I’ll work it out somehow.

Please check back late this afternoon.

  1. Enjoy the activity. I loved the race I saw in person in Iowa. Both from the stands and in the pits.

Iowa is one of my absolute favorite tracks. I’m really looking forward to practice and qualifying times.

I hope you are thinking about finishing your weekend at Knoxville, 30 miles south, for the 410 sprintcars. However that would mean a pretty late night and a long, dark drive home.

You can tell it’s Iowa, Knoxville’s division winners, along with a check and a trophy, will get one-half of a dressed out hog.
