Will Power Takes Control at Road America

Another race weekend at Road America is now in the books. It had beautiful weather at times, and dreary rain at others. But the crowds never seem to lose their spirits. There was a first-time Indy NXT winner, when Jamie Chadwick took her first checkered flag. There was a first-time IndyCar pole winner in Linus Lundqvist.

There was chaos at the start as Lundqvist, teammate Marcus Armstrong and Colton Herta got together in Turn One on Lap One. As it turns out, there were three caution periods in the first six laps.stirring comments from some fans that we were looking at another Detroit.

But things settled down and the race went green for the rest of the race. Team Penske was on their game as all three cars took turns leading the race. Chip Ganassi racing had a day to forget. Aside from Lundqvist and Armstrong getting together at the start, Kyffin Simpson was punted into the wall by Christian Rasmussen. Scott Dixon was running strong at first, but suddenly dropped like a stone, and finished twenty-first. Alex Palou was the only Ganassi driver that had a decent day, finishing fourth.

But it was good timing and swift pit work by Will Power that put him out front for good on Lap 49. It was his first race win since Belle Isle two years ago. It was an emotional Victory Lane, for a lot of reasons that I will get into more in tomorrow’s Random Thoughts post.

Congratulations to Will Power for his win at the 2024 XPEL Grand Prix of Road America. He and his crew earned it. Not only did he come away with the win, he now leads the championship by five over Alex Palou. This is shaping up to be a very interesting points battle.  Check back tomorrow for more thoughts and comments.
